At the request of a friend, I designed a wagashi, a traditional Japanese confection. This was a personal work and not for sale. It was inspired by the words of Shuntaro Tanikawa’s poem “Haru.”
The poem ends with the line, “I with god had a quiet talk.” Holding someone dear in mind, and imagining a gentle ascent through flowers, trees, water, and sky toward the depths above, I gave form to that quiet upward feeling.
Flowers, snow, and sky are each interpreted as seasonal presences, expressed through soft curves and subtle shifts of color.
